Moulsoe has a Public Access Defibrillator<\/strong> located outside Moulsoe Millennium Hall (next door to The Carrington Arms public house).\u00a0 The Defibrillator is locked\u00a0in a lit yellow safe situated on the left hand side wall as you face the Hall. \u00a0The Emergency Services hold the safe’s access code.

What is a Defibrillator?<\/h1>\n

A defibrillator is a portable electronic device used in the treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.\u00a0 Sudden Cardiac Arrest is when the electrical impulses that normally control the heart malfunction and they become chaotic and uncoordinated.\u00a0 Unlike a heart attack \u2013 which occurs when an artery supplying the heart becomes blocked causing chest pains \u2013 Sudden Cardiac Arrest has little or no warning and without timely treatment is patient is likely to die.\u00a0 A defibrillator monitors the heart\u2019s electrical rhythm and delivers a shock if and when it is needed.\u00a0\u00a0 The shock stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish its own effective rhythm.<\/p>\n

A Public Access Defibrillator is designed for use in the community, it is simple to use so that a lay bystander is able to locate a device nearby and use it successfully with little or no training. \u00a0Moulsoe has an iPAD SP1 Automated External Defibrillator (\u201cAED\u201d).<\/p>\n

South Central Ambulance Service recommends that a Public Access Defibrillator is installed wherever medical treatment is more than 5 minutes away.\u00a0 This is because 750,000 Europeans suffered from a heart attack each year, 300,000 of these are Britons.\u00a0 Half of these lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest and just 4% survive. The chance of survival diminishes by 10% each minute that passes between the Sudden Cardiac Arrest and effective treatment.\u00a0 In communities that have access to a Public Access Defibrillator, the chance of survival increases from 4% to 24% due to an awareness of the emergency steps necessary and early defibrillation.<\/p>\n

Emergency Steps to Help Save a Life<\/h1>\n

\"Defibrillation<\/a><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Check for danger<\/strong> to you or the casualty.<\/li>\n
  2. If it is safe, check to see if the casualty responds<\/strong> to you.<\/li>\n
  3. Shout for help and call 999<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. With the casualty on their back, check the airways<\/strong> for blockages.<\/li>\n
  5. Listen to their breathing for 10 seconds to check if they are breathing normally<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If the casualty is breathing normally (at least two good breaths), place the casualty in the recovery position and wait for the Emergency Services to arrive.<\/p>\n

    If the casualty is not breathing<\/span> normally, immediately start CPR<\/strong> (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or chest compressions) while a second person obtains the access code from the 999 operator and collects the AED\/Defibrillator<\/strong> from Moulsoe Millennium Hall.<\/p>\n

    The first person continues CPR while the second person turns on the AED\/Defibrillator and follows the automatic instructions.<\/p>\n

    The AED\/Defibrillator will decide if a shock is necessary.\u00a0 Stand back and make sure no one is touching<\/span> the casualty before pressing the button to deliver the shock.<\/p>\n

    Only use an AED\/Defibrillator on someone who does not respond and is not breathing normally.<\/p>\n

    You can only get the access code by dialling 999.<\/p>\n

    Always call 999 in an emergency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    About the Device<\/h1>\n

    The device is an iPAD SP1 Automated External Defibrillator (\u201cAED\u201d) supplied by Wel Medical, Stableford House, Sebastopol Road, Aldershot GU11 1SG www.welmedical.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    The device was installed and then checked and registered with the Emergency Services by Ian Jones of South Central Ambulance Service on 18 November 2014.<\/p>\n

    The device was checked and new pads installed on 14 April 2017.<\/p>\n
